SAN MATEO, Calif., RALEIGH, N.C., SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — October 6, 2010newScale, rPath and Eucalyptus Systems, a coalition focused on bringing self-service private and hybrid clouds to the enterprise, today announced that it has formalized its name and launched a coalition website located at The coalition, which is now called The NRE Alliance, was announced last month at VMworld 2010, where technologies from NRE members newScale and rPath won Best of VMworld 2010 awards in the "Private Cloud Computing" category.

Self-service private and hybrid cloud computing continues to generate a lot of interest as pressure mounts on IT departments to deliver the kinds of simple, self-service, on-demand infrastructure services readily available from public clouds like Rackspace or Amazon EC2. However, most IT organizations lack the infrastructure and process maturity to provide the dynamic elasticity found in the public cloud. And most public cloud services lack the governance, management and control required for enterprise IT.

Last month at VMworld 2010, newScale, rPath and Eucalyptus Systems announced an integrated technology platform that will provide an on-ramp to private and hybrid clouds in the enterprise. The three vendors have combined the best in self-service, automation and elasticity to deliver a complete enterprise cloud solution that will help IT departments create their own private clouds and manage access to public cloud resources.

"Cloud computing is a megatrend that is shaping the future of IT," said Julie Craig, research director at Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), in a report titled Cloud Coalition: rPath, newScale, and Eucalyptus Systems Partner on Self-Service Public and Private Cloud. "It is forcing companies to reevaluate their approach to delivering IT services, to staffing and budgeting, and to application governance and management."

The agility benefits of private and hybrid clouds are compelling. With controlled, consistent services and compute capacity available on demand for project leads and application development and testing groups, IT can step out of the way and focus on higher-value tasks—freeing up resources and budget for faster product delivery and new innovation.

"One of the main benefits of this coalition is agility, helping multiple departments within IT to accelerate testing and deployment of new business applications," said Craig in the EMA report. "[The NRE Alliance] offers enterprise IT organizations a faster on-ramp to on-demand IT service delivery."

The NRE Alliance offers the foundations for a complete enterprise cloud solution. newScale provides a self-service IT storefront with on-demand provisioning from a menu of private or public cloud service options; rPath is the "service factory," or a centralized software distribution hub for managing IT system construction and change; and Eucalyptus Systems provides private cloud infrastructure for elastic scaling of workloads based on dynamic demand. The complete solution is delivered by MomentumSI.

"We like each of these partners individually—and together, their platform adds up to more than the sum of its parts," noted Rachel Chalmers, research director at The 451 Group, in a report titled Eucalyptus Systems, newScale and rPath Join to Build Integrated Cloud On-ramp.

Paul Burns, president of analyst firm Neovise, says that The NRE Alliance delivers on the four key elements of an enterprise cloud—self-service, automation, elasticity and integration. In his report, Four Keys to the Enterprise Cloud, he says, "It is these same four keys to the enterprise cloud which newScale, rPath, Eucalyptus Systems and MomentumSI have come together to provide. Building and managing a private cloud is now within reach."

The NRE Alliance website is now available, featuring a number of resources, including a two-minute video, an on-demand webinar replay, white papers, a free readiness assessment workshop, and more. The website can be found at

CEOs of The NRE Alliance member companies—Marten Mickos, Eucalyptus Systems; Scott Hammond, newScale; Mike Torto, rPath; and Jeff Schneider, MomentumSI—are teaming up for a live online panel on November 2, 2010, titled Toward Self-Service Private/Hybrid Cloud: An Expert Discussion on the Journey from IT Bottleneck to IT-as-a-Service.
