Third-party Solutions and Product Enhancements Make it Easier to Deploy On-Premise Cloud Computing with Eucalyptus

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – July 22, 2009 – Eucalyptus Systems, Inc., creators of the leading open source private cloud platform, today announced that the ecosystem of third-party software solutions for the Eucalyptus private cloud software is rapidly expanding, with organizations such as AppScale, Canonical, CohesiveFT, RightScale, rPath and Ylastic providing solutions that extend the usability and accessibility of Eucalyptus. The company also announced new functionality in the latest release of Eucalyptus that makes it even easier to create and use secure, on-premise private and hybrid clouds.

"It's really exciting to see the industry enthusiasm for Eucalyptus, with new third-party solutionspopping up all the time," said Dr. Rich Wolski, Eucalyptus Systems co-founder, CTO and former director of the Eucalyptus research project at the University of California, Santa Barbara(UCSB). "With the growing Eucalyptus ecosystem, along with worldwide distribution of Eucalyptus as the cloud computing engine powering the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, we are optimistic that Eucalyptus is quickly becoming the standard platform for on-premise and hybrid cloud computing."

Eucalyptus is an open source software infrastructure for implementing on-premise cloud computing using an organization's own information technology (IT) infrastructure, without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration. Eucalyptus turns data center resources such as machines, networks, and storage systems into a "cloud" that is controlled and customized by local IT. With Eucalyptus, businesses of any size can leverage their own IT resources to get the benefits of cloud computing without the concerns of lock-in, security ambiguity and unexpected storage costs that can be associated with public clouds. Eucalyptus is the only cloud architecture to support the same application programming interfaces (APIs) as public clouds, and today Eucalyptus is compatible with the Amazon AWS public cloud infrastructure.

The latest release of Eucalyptus (version 1.5.2) includes numerous enhancements to make it easier to deploy on-premise Eucalyptus clouds, such as pre-packaged Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), the ability to easily register a Eucalyptus cloud from the management platforms of partners such as RightScale and CohesiveFT, and enhanced client tool support.

"We have been strong Eucalyptus supporters from its inception, and it's great to see it being quickly adopted as the open source cloud platform," said Thorsten von Eicken, co-founder and CTO of RightScale. "We are thrilled that users have direct access through the Eucalyptus interface to RightScale's easy-to-use, automated platform to manage their private clouds alongside any public clouds."

Eucalyptus runs on a wide range of Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, as well as the other popular Linux distributions. Through its partnership with Canonical, Eucalyptus is the cloud computing engine behind the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (powered by Eucalyptus), which is part of the most recent Ubuntu Linux distribution. Eucalyptus will ship with every copy of Ubuntu, starting with the Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition.

"We are very excited about our relationship with Canonical," said Woody Rollins, co-founder and CEO of Eucalyptus. "It is a pleasure to collaborate with a company that shares our commitment to innovation and technical excellence."

About Eucalyptus Systems

Eucalyptus Systems provides the only solution that transforms a customer's IT infrastructure into a private cloud that works like Amazon Web Services (AWS). The Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform (CMP) is open source software that provides access to the scalability of the AWS public cloud while allowing for customization and control of internal cloud resources. By creating a hybrid cloud bridge between Eucalyptus and AWS, customers gain the flexibility to choose where to run workloads. With Eucalyptus, IT can now create an agile, affordable, and AWS-compatible environment for continuous integration (CI) and self-service IT. Empower innovation with a Eucalyptus cloud.
