Company Launches Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition 2.0; Adds New Features to Create and Manage Private and Hybrid Clouds in Enterprise Environments

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – June 16, 2010 – Eucalyptus Systems, Inc., creator of the leading open source private cloud software, today launched Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition (EE) 2.0, a major upgrade to the commercial edition of the open source Eucalyptus software for private and hybrid cloud computing. Eucalyptus EE 2.0 includes new support for Windows virtual machines (VMs), enabling users to integrate any application or workload running on the Windows operating system into a Eucalyptus private cloud. Eucalyptus EE 2.0 also provides new accounting and user group management features to further enhance its usability for large-scale enterprise deployments. With this new version, Eucalyptus EE is now optimized for highly scalable private clouds that support applications running on all major enterprise operating systems.

"Eucalyptus EE 2.0 is built on the core Eucalyptus open source platform, with additional functionality designed to optimize building and deploying massively scalable, high performance private clouds in the enterprise," said Marten Mickos, Eucalyptus Systems CEO. "Over the past year, Eucalyptus has become established as the standard for private cloud computing, and we believe that Eucalyptus EE 2.0 will accelerate its adoption in mainstream businesses to improve agility and reduce IT costs using secure, controlled on-premise infrastructure."

Eucalyptus EE is built on Eucalyptus -- open source software for implementing on-premise cloud computing using an organization's own information technology (IT) infrastructure, without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration. Eucalyptus turns data center resources such as machines, networks, and storage systems into a highly scalable cloud that is controlled and customized by local IT. Eucalyptus is fully compatible with public cloud APIs such as the Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) cloud infrastructure, for seamless hybrid AWS-Eucalyptus clouds.

Eucalyptus EE 2.0 Delivers Windows, User Management, VMware & SAN Storage

In addition to Linux images, Eucalyptus EE 2.0 customers can now deploy images running on Windows Server® 2003, 2008 and Windows® 7, along with an installed application stack, in a Eucalyptus private cloud environment. Users can remotely connect to their Windows VMs via RDP and use Amazon get-password semantics.

Eucalyptus EE 2.0 also features new accounting and user group management capabilities that provide a new level of permissioning control and cost tracking for different groups of users throughout an enterprise. Now, a Eucalyptus administrator can define a group of users, for instance by departments such as "development" or "operations," and allocate different levels of access based on the group's needs. Groups can be associated with a specific server cluster to further refine access within a Eucalyptus cloud. In addition, Eucalyptus EE 2.0 provides new capabilities to track cloud usage and costs per group, which can be used in a charge-back model or for greater overall visibility.

"With the new Windows support in Eucalyptus EE, we can spin up our Windows and Linux virtual images, built on virtually any hypervisor, and create a comprehensive secured IT resource inside our Eucalyptus cloud," said Joe Lin, director of software development, data center division, Trend Micro. "We're pleased that Eucalyptus has broadened its usability in enterprise environments with important new functionalities."

Eucalyptus EE 2.0's new Windows and user management features add to its previous enterprise capabilities, such as support for VMware's industry-leading virtualization technologies, vSphere™, ESX™ and ESXi™. Eucalyptus also supports other hypervisors typically found in a data center, such as Xen® and KVM, providing customers the flexibility to configure cloud solutions that best meet their infrastructure needs. In addition, Eucalyptus EE provides an image converter that helps users develop VMware-enabled Eucalyptus applications that are compatible with Amazon EC2.

Eucalyptus EE 2.0 customers can also take advantage of its SAN adaptor to connect a Eucalyptus cloud directly to a high-performance Storage Area Network (SAN). With the SAN adapter, Eucalyptus EE delivers significantly increased IO (input/output) performance and scalability, allowing for much larger-scale clouds.

Eucalyptus EE 2.0 will be demonstrated at the inaugural Eucalyptus Partner Day on June 22 in downtown San Francisco. Partners, customers and potential Eucalyptus users are welcome. Space is limited, so attendees should register at www.eucalyptus.com/partners/partnerday2010.

About Eucalyptus Systems

Eucalyptus Systems provides the only solution that transforms a customer's IT infrastructure into a private cloud that works like Amazon Web Services (AWS). The Eucalyptus Cloud Management Platform (CMP) is open source software that provides access to the scalability of the AWS public cloud while allowing for customization and control of internal cloud resources. By creating a hybrid cloud bridge between Eucalyptus and AWS, customers gain the flexibility to choose where to run workloads. With Eucalyptus, IT can now create an agile, affordable, and AWS-compatible environment for continuous integration (CI) and self-service IT. Empower innovation with a Eucalyptus cloud.
