Amazon Web Services Compatibility

Amazon Web Services Overview

Eucalyptus is interface-compatible with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, which means you can reuse your existing AWS-compatible tools and scripts to manage your own private cloud. We implement Amazon's API (application programming interface) on top of the Eucalyptus infrastructure, so any tool in the cloud ecosystem that communicates with Amazon AWS can communicate with a Eucalyptus-based private cloud.

Features

Eucalyptus implements the various components of Amazon Web Services:

Amazon AWS Public Cloud and Eucalyptus Private Cloud

These components are open-source and communicate with each other using well-defined web service definitions, with an additional communication layer that exposes the Amazon-compatible interface.

Advantages

  • Access to the ecosystem of tools designed for Amazon AWS.
  • Cross-hypervisor support: Xen, KVM, and VMware. (VMware support is available in the Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition).
  • Leverage your VMware investment and overlay an AWS-compatible interface on VMware infrastructure.
  • Run Amazon images in your private cloud in minutes.
  • Seamlessly run the same applications inside or outside your data center resources.
  • Satisfy regulatory and compliance requirements by keeping private data in your own data center.

What This Means to You

If you already use Amazon Web Services

If you already use Amazon Web Services in your organization for hosting, elastic computing or storage you can use Eucalyptus to seamlessly create your own internal cloud. It is interface-compatible with Amazon AWS and your existing cloud monitoring and management infrastructure. An internal/hybrid cloud can help you overcome regulatory and compliance roadblocks, increase performance, add flexibility to your architecture, and save money.

If you do not already use Amazon Web Services

If you aren't an Amazon Web Services user, but you're interested in cloud computing, Eucalyptus is a great way to get started. Eucalyptus is compatible with multiple hypervisors, including Xen, KVM, and VMware, and can be installed on any of the major Linux distributions. A proof of concept private cloud is easy to set up, and we provide services to help you.
